Attempt to go Kitesurf in La Ventana – 20220210

Today was quite interesting. I woke up kind of lazily and did nothing until around 11. I tightened up my motorcycle battery terminals which were arcing when starting last night. I then headed to the beach to try to rent some kitesurfing gear. I noticed no one was kiting and when I showed up there wasn’t even anyone there. I went down to the water to jump in and this group from the US waved me over and I got to talking to them for a while. They were pretty nice and pretty much all family. They were all kitesurfers too.

I had a few beers with them and then we went to La Tuna which is right next to the spot there. The tacos there are amazing. I tried the quesadilla and had a mojito.

The guy who had waved me over was named Grom and I was talking to him for a bit. Apparently there were some pro kitesurfers at the table too. Pretty cool. The waiter had misunderstood me when I ordered my drink and brought a shot full of sugar water to sweeten my drink which I definitely didn’t want. I bet Grom’s friends I could get him to drink it and then ventured to try. He immediately took it when I told him it was tequila and I immediately felt awful at the look on his face after he drank it. I felt like I had really stabbed him in the back so I ordered 2 shots of tequila and took a real one with him.

The group invited me to keep hanging out with them but I lost them while trying to follow their truck because one of the bungees had disconnected and was dangling in the wheel. I got kind of lucky nothing happened there.

Relaxing at the Airbnb

I then took a nap and headed to Baja Joe’s which actually had pretty bad tacos in my opinion. But the ambiance was kind of cool. I met another guy there who was pretty cool. This guy named Daniel who had backpacked all over the place and was into kitesurfing and everything. Then I headed back here to the airbnb and just relaxed for the night

Ride from La Paz to La Ventana – 20220209

Today I drove from La Paz to La Ventana. It’s only about a 45 minute ride to get down here. I rented an airbnb for 4 nights and my plan is to kitesurf for maybe 2 days while I’m here. The place I found charges $120 per day which seems like an alright deal to me as far as kitesurfing goes. I’m looking forward to it and hopefully it works out. Right now they haven’t responded to my message saying I wanted to rent.

I drank some coffee this morning and loved the ride here. Little hills but amazing nature and cactus everywhere. Dry and dusty like everywhere here.

I checked into the airbnb, took a nap, and then headed to the kitesurfing school to go talk to someone. There were kites EVERYWHERE. It was unreal. Clearly a perfect place for doing it.

There was a spot right next door called El Tuna where I ate some of the best tacos ever. I sat next to this nice couple from Austin that had just taken some kitesurfing lessons and we chatted for quite a bit.

I then went back to the airbnb and got everything ready to go check out this hot spring on the north side of town. When I got there there was just some girl sitting in the hot spring and I asked her if it was hot. She said some of the little pools were. She warned me not to test this one pool because it was too hot. I did anyways and burned the shit out of my toe, so hot! I stayed there for about 3 hours and talked with her and we were both building this wall to try to keep the cold ocean water out of the pool we were in. She was traveling by van with her husband. It seemed like a pretty cool time. There was some huge van meetup nearby the week prior so there were vanners sprinkled around the whole area.

After it got dark I headed back and stopped at a grocery store and restaurant to get some more food. I ate the grouper and it was absolutely delicious. I’ll be back at that place.

I’m now back at the airbnb and finished editing my mexico part 1 video! It’s not great, but I still like it.

La Paz Mexica and a Crackhead With a Machete – 20220206

I finally got to La Paz from New york. After exploring New York for a full layover, then Mexico City I am finally ready to relax. Mexico city was pretty nice. I had a friend show me around and we went to the rooftop bar there in one of the famous buildings. I met a guy dressed up as a gingerbread man so of course took a photo with him and just walked around a bunch at some of the markets in the city.

The next day I flew to La Paz and I taxied over to my couchsurfing friend’s house. Apparently you can’t pick up ubers or Didis now at the airport so you have to pay the $297 pesos to get anywhere in La Paz. Super dumb. I despise the taxi mafias in all these cities because they are WAY overpriced and the service is (almost) always awful.

I showed up at Oswaldo and Wendy’s place and chatted with them for a bit. They are working on a kombucha business so I offered to buy a bunch of bottles of it and told them if they ever legitimized their business I would definitely be interested in investing in it. I really believe they would do a great job with it.

I drove to my airbnb, checked in, and dropped my stuff off. Then went downtown La Paz to get a little something to eat. I went to a place called Arkansa Cocina but I really wasn’t impressed with the food. It was all barbeque (American style) and I guess I just really don’t like the type of food. I then went down to the beach area to walk around and explore a little.

I was sitting on some concrete right in front of the beach and there were some groups nearby drinking, dancing, and having lots of fun. All of a sudden a drugged up guy came and sat at a bench near me.

It was incredibly interesting what happened next right in front of me. After about 8 minutes 2 big cop trucks rolled up on the guy and all the cops stormed out and surrounded him immediately. I thought the guy would just talk to them but he immediately pulled out a machete and started swinging. I though he would be shot immediately but none of the police shot. It was literally about 20 feet away from me so I backed up and gave them some space. I left the helmet where I was sitting and was pretty scared.

For whatever reason one of the police picked up the helmets I guess to use as a weapon against the guy. He threw the helmet which ended up in the Ocean soaking wet. He then picked up again and brought with him into the police truck as they chased after the guy. It was wild watching all the trucks roll by looking for the guy. I waited at the bench and walked around to look for the missing glove. I just found one glove and waited around some more wondering why the hell they don’t issue the police motorcycle helmets if that’s clearly a better weapon than the weapons they are issued.

Finally after about 20 minutes he came back and handed me the helmet which was dripping wet but magically still had the other glove inside. I was pretty happy because it would have been hard to replace. They are pretty good gloves. But the clear plastic face shield had broken off which I knew would be hard to find.

I finally headed out from there and got some much needed rest.
